Initial Idea

Initially I wanted to do something based off of the Reddit thread
"Parents of Reddit, what is the creepiest thing your young child has ever said to you?" (2013)
I was inspired to create a creepy stories webseries based project, we brainstormed the idea, and I decided to make a podcast. Within this we considered making a series of podcasts with a different scary story for each podcast, with a central theme of a child telling the stories, perhaps at a sleepover, or I also considered having a child telling the stories to their doll. This whole project was influenced by the audio series Welcome to the Night Vale (2013) which I have noticed has been very popular on social media sites such as Tumblr (2007) and Twitter (2006) Welcome to the Night Vale (2013) is a surreal horror drama series, and I was inspired by the unusualness of it, and it's reflection and influence from previous radio dramas. It's surrealist narrative reminded me of a book I had read The Safety of Objects (Homes, 1990), and when I considered the nature of the book, short stories focussing on the central theme of suburbia, I decided that it was an ideal book to be written into a podcast serial.

I decided on a podcast because I really enjoyed the foley workshop and wanted to create something which would work well in a podcast format, I believe this story will be a good one to dramatise, because it was made into a film in 2001, under the same name and I think it failed to come together as the person who dramatised it chose to incorporate a central narrative, something I feel failed, as it's subversiveness is more suited to individual independent narratives, I think that because there was this failing in the production of the film and because of the uncomfortable explicit nature of the stories, I think it is something that would be suited to the medium of a podcast.
